# Which HVAC Warranty Is Best? Four Types Compared (2026)

By Noble Team · October 1, 2026

Noble Admin Network | Published on: October 1, 2026 | Time to read: 13 min | Updated on: October 17, 2026

Short answer

No single HVAC warranty is best for every home. There are four types: the manufacturer's warranty, an extended labor plan, a home warranty plan, and a lifetime warranty through the installing retailer. The best fit for you pays for labor, lasts as long as you'll own the home, and has an insurer or a strong company behind it.

This guide is for homeowners comparing coverage on a new or existing heating and cooling system. It compares the four types of HVAC warranty on the same eight questions, shows which type fits which situation, and ends with the questions to ask before you sign.

#### Key Takeaways

- A manufacturer's warranty covers some parts, with registration, usually for 5 to 10 years. Labor isn't covered on most brands.
- An extended labor plan adds labor for a fixed term. Trinity Warranty Solutions estimates 10 years of labor coverage at $500 to $1,900, depending on the system.
- A home warranty plan runs one year at a time, charges a fee on each claim, and limits what it pays, such as $5,000 per system at American Home Shield.
- A lifetime warranty through the installing retailer can include labor on covered repairs for as long as you own the home, as long as you keep up the maintenance the warranty requires.
- Before you sign any of them, ask who pays labor, for how long, what voids the coverage, and who stands behind it.

## Who has the best warranty for HVAC?

No single company has the best HVAC warranty for every home. The right one depends on your system's age, how long you'll stay, and whether you want labor covered. The table below compares the four types on the same eight questions, using each company's own published terms, checked in October 2026.

![Chart of how long each type of HVAC warranty lasts: a manufacturer's warranty 5 to 10 years on some parts with registration, an extended labor plan 1 to 12 years, a home warranty plan 1 year at a time, and a lifetime warranty through the retailer with no set term in Noble's example, while you own the home and keep up a spring and a fall service every year](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/hs-fs/hubfs/noble-blog/noble-f17-08-how-long-each-type-lasts.jpeg?width=1456&height=720&name=noble-f17-08-how-long-each-type-lasts.jpeg)

| Type | Who issues it | How long | Parts | Labor | Who pays at repair time | What you do to keep it | What usually voids or limits it | Transfer if you sell |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Manufacturer's warranty** | The company that made the equipment | Usually 5 to 10 years. [Trane](https://www.trane.com/residential/en/resources/warranty-and-registration/): usually 5 years base, usually 10 registered | Some parts, with registration | Not on most brands. [Carrier](https://www.carrier.com/residential/en/us/homeowner-resources/warranty/) and [Lennox](https://www.lennox.com/buyers-guide/why-buy-lennox/warranty) offer a 3-year labor option when you register | The maker covers the part. On Trane's base and registered warranties, you pay labor and shipping | Register on time: 60 days for Trane and Lennox, 90 days for Carrier | Late registration shortens the term. Trane covers manufacturer defects only | Varies by brand. Trane transfers within 90 days of the sale for $99 |
| **Extended labor or service plan**, such as a 10-year labor plan | A warranty company, sold through your installer. [Trinity](https://www.trinitywarranty.com/extended-warranty-programs/contractors) says its plans are insured by an "A" rated insurer | A fixed term: 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 years at Trinity, up to 12 at [JB Warranties](https://jbwarranties.com/faqs) | Depends on the plan. [Trinity](https://www.trinitywarranty.com/resources/how-much-do-hvac-extended-warranties-cost) says the years usually refer to labor only | Yes, on covered repairs, at an hourly rate set when the plan is sold | The plan pays your installer. Trinity and JB Warranties charge no deductible | Buy in time: JB allows 2 years from startup, and Trinity treats equipment as new for 2 years | Whatever the contract leaves out. JB's labor coverage starts 91 days after startup | JB Warranties transfers free. Trinity's page doesn't say |
| **Home warranty plan** | A home warranty company. You buy it yourself, and it isn't tied to your installer | One year at a time. [American Home Shield](https://www.ahs.com/our-coverage/home-systems/air-conditioners/) uses a 1-year term, and [Choice](https://www.choicehomewarranty.com/common-questions/) says typically 365 days | Covered repairs up to a limit: $5,000 per system per term at AHS, $3,000 per item per 12 months at Choice | Part of a covered repair, after your fee. [Choice](https://www.choicehomewarranty.com/user-agreement/) excludes labor on parts still under the maker's warranty | You pay a fee on each claim, $100 at Choice. The plan pays the rest, up to its limit | Pay the plan price and renew. Coverage starts 30 days after you sign up at AHS and Choice | Limits and exclusions. Choice doesn't cover known or unknown pre-existing conditions | Choice lets you transfer the agreement at any time, with no fee |
| **Lifetime warranty through the installing retailer**, with Noble's program as the example | The installing retailer offers it, and a warranty administrator runs it. A national, brand-name A-rated insurance company stands behind every [Noble](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/homeowners) contract | As long as you own the home and keep up a spring and a fall service every year | Covered repairs on the major internal components of the system | Included on covered repairs | $0 for a covered repair. There's no separate warranty fee: the retailer builds its cost into the price of the installation | A spring and a fall service every year, with proof sent to Noble within 30 days | Missing a required service, or the proof of it. Residential systems only | No. Noble's terms say the coverage is valid only for the original purchaser and ends when the home is sold |

*Checked October 2026. Terms vary by brand, model, plan, and state, so read the contract for your system.*

The manufacturer's warranty comes with every new system, so it's the base layer, and the other three types add to it. A warranty that pays for the part but not the technician can still leave you with a bill.

## How do you compare HVAC warranties side by side?

Compare every warranty on the same questions, and get the answers in writing. Ask who issues it, how long it lasts, what parts and labor it pays for, what you pay at repair time, what you must do to keep it, what voids it, and whether it transfers. Those eight questions are the columns in our table.

#### How We Compared

We answered the same eight questions for each of the four types, and those questions are the columns of the table.

Every fact comes from the company's own warranty page, plan agreement, or published estimate. Manufacturer terms come from Trane, Carrier, and Lennox. Labor plan terms come from Trinity Warranty Solutions and JB Warranties. Home warranty terms come from American Home Shield, Choice Home Warranty, and First American Home Warranty. The lifetime warranty terms come from the program page of the one example we used.

We read every page on October 17, 2026. Where a company's page doesn't answer a question, the table says so instead of guessing.

This guide is published by the company that administers the lifetime warranty in row four. That's why every row gets the same columns and a source for each fact. You can read more about how we research and compare.

The answers differ most at repair time. On [Trane's](https://www.trane.com/residential/en/resources/warranty-and-registration/) base and registered warranties, you pay labor and shipping. [Trinity](https://www.trinitywarranty.com/extended-warranty-programs/contractors) and [JB Warranties](https://jbwarranties.com/faqs) charge no deductible on their labor plans. [Choice Home Warranty](https://www.choicehomewarranty.com/common-questions/) charges a $100 service fee per claim and pays the rest up to its limit. With the lifetime warranty in row four, a covered repair costs the homeowner $0, labor included.

![Chart of who pays when something breaks: on Trane's base and registered manufacturer's warranties you pay labor and shipping, Trinity and JB Warranties labor plans charge no deductible and pay a set hourly rate, Choice Home Warranty charges a $100 service fee per claim and pays the rest up to its limit, and in our row-four lifetime warranty example a covered repair costs the homeowner $0, labor is included, there's no separate warranty fee, and an A-rated insurer backs it](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/hs-fs/hubfs/noble-blog/noble-f17-08-who-pays-at-repair-time.jpeg?width=1456&height=720&name=noble-f17-08-who-pays-at-repair-time.jpeg)

The [Federal Trade Commission's](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/extended-warranties-and-service-contracts) advice on extended warranties and service contracts applies to all four types. It says one "costs extra and might cover different issues than a manufacturer's warranty," and its plainest rule is this: "If it isn't listed in the contract, assume that it's not covered."

## What does a manufacturer's HVAC warranty cover?

A manufacturer's warranty covers some parts, with registration, usually for 5 to 10 years. Labor isn't covered on most brands. It comes with every new system at no extra cost, and registering on time is what gets you the longer term, so it's the first thing to do after installation, whatever else you buy.

![Chart of how long you have to register a new HVAC system: Trane 60 days, with usually 10 years of parts registered and usually 5 not registered; Lennox 60 days, adding parts years or a 3-year labor option; Carrier 90 days, after which the 5-year parts warranty applies with no labor](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/hs-fs/hubfs/noble-blog/noble-d16-08-registration-windows.jpeg?width=1456&height=720&name=noble-d16-08-registration-windows.jpeg)

[Trane](https://www.trane.com/residential/en/resources/warranty-and-registration/) says its base limited warranty usually lasts five years, and its registered limited warranty usually lasts 10 years if you register within 60 days of installation. Both cover parts that fail from a manufacturer defect, "but not the labor to repair them."

[Carrier](https://www.carrier.com/residential/en/us/homeowner-resources/warranty/) lets you choose a 10-year parts warranty or 5 years of parts plus 3 years of labor. You have to register within 90 days, and the labor option exists only if your installer takes part in Carrier's program. [Lennox](https://www.lennox.com/buyers-guide/why-buy-lennox/warranty) gives registered owners a similar choice within 60 days: longer parts coverage, or a shorter parts extension plus 3 years of labor. Register late with Carrier, and its standard 5-year parts warranty applies, without labor coverage.

Terms change by model, product tier, and state, so check the certificate for your exact unit. Our guide to [what HVAC manufacturer warranties cover](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/hvac-manufacturer-warranty-coverage) has the details for each brand.

## What does an extended labor plan add?

An extended labor or service plan pays the technician on covered repairs for a fixed number of years, while the manufacturer's warranty pays for the part. It's sold through your installer, usually when you buy the system, and the contract decides which repairs it pays for and at what rate.

Terms differ by provider. [Trinity Warranty Solutions](https://www.trinitywarranty.com/extended-warranty-programs/contractors) sells residential plans of 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 years, insured by an "A" rated insurance company, with no deductible. [JB Warranties](https://jbwarranties.com/faqs) sells terms up to 12 years, charges no deductible, and says its warranties are fully transferable free of charge. JB's labor coverage begins 91 days after startup or purchase, whichever is later.

Price depends on the system. [Trinity](https://www.trinitywarranty.com/resources/how-much-do-hvac-extended-warranties-cost) estimates 10 years of labor coverage at $500 to $940 for an air conditioner and $1,010 to $1,900 for a complete heat pump system. It notes that actual costs could be lower or higher. Whether that's worth it on your system is the subject of our guide to 10-year HVAC labor warranties.

## Will a home warranty cover HVAC replacement?

Sometimes, up to the plan's limit. A home warranty is a one-year contract you buy yourself that pays for covered repairs, and some plans replace a system they can't repair. The limit matters, because a full replacement can cost more than the plan pays, and you pay a service fee on every claim.

![Chart of what three home warranty companies pay on HVAC: American Home Shield $5,000 per system per one-year plan term, Choice Home Warranty $3,000 per covered item per 12 months plus a $100 fee per claim, and First American no total cap on conventional heating and cooling systems, which it says cost $7,500 to $12,500 or more to replace](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/hs-fs/hubfs/noble-blog/noble-d16-08-home-warranty-hvac-limits.jpeg?width=1456&height=720&name=noble-d16-08-home-warranty-hvac-limits.jpeg)

[American Home Shield](https://www.ahs.com/our-coverage/home-systems/air-conditioners/) says it will replace an air conditioning system it can't repair, subject to a $5,000 limit per unit. [Choice Home Warranty](https://www.choicehomewarranty.com/user-agreement/) caps each covered item at $3,000 per 12 months, [charges a $100 fee per claim](https://www.choicehomewarranty.com/common-questions/), and doesn't cover known or unknown pre-existing conditions. [First American](https://homewarranty.firstam.com/coverage/hvac) says it has no total cap on what it pays for conventional heating and air conditioning systems, and puts a replacement at $7,500 to $12,500 or more. A full guide to home warranties and HVAC is coming soon.

For homeowners

## How does a lifetime warranty from your installing retailer work?

Some HVAC retailers include a lifetime warranty with a new installation, run by a warranty administrator. Terms vary a lot, so check four things: whose lifetime it is, which parts it covers, whether labor is included, and who pays a covered repair if the company that sold it closes.

The word "lifetime" isn't a standard term, and some lifetime promises cover only one part or the installer's own workmanship. Our guide to [a lifetime workmanship guarantee versus a warranty](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/what-lifetime-warranty-means-hvac) explains that difference, and what a limited lifetime warranty means covers the fine print. To see why insurance backing matters, read our guide to [what happens to an HVAC warranty if the company closes](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/insurance-backed-hvac-warranty).

The Noble lifetime warranty in row four of our table is one example of this type. It covers repairs on the major internal components of the system, labor included, for as long as you own your home and keep up a spring and a fall service every year. There's no separate charge for it: the retailer builds its cost into the price of the installation, and a covered repair costs you $0. A national, brand-name A-rated insurance company stands behind every contract.

## Which HVAC brand offers the best warranty?

No brand wins on every line, and terms change by model, tier, and state. Compare the registered parts term, whether a labor option exists, how long you have to register, and whether coverage transfers. Remember that the brand's warranty covers parts on one unit, and your installer decides what else comes with it.

On the pages we checked, [Trane](https://www.trane.com/residential/en/resources/warranty-and-registration/) stands out for transfer, at $99 within 90 days of a home sale, while [Carrier](https://www.carrier.com/residential/en/us/homeowner-resources/warranty/) and [Lennox](https://www.lennox.com/buyers-guide/why-buy-lennox/warranty) stand out for offering a 3-year labor option when you register.

For brand-by-brand terms, see our [manufacturer warranty guide](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/hvac-manufacturer-warranty-coverage), and for what the system itself costs to install, see [new HVAC system cost by square footage](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/hvac-cost-by-square-footage).

## Which HVAC warranty fits your situation?

Start with your situation, not a brand name. The same four types fit different homes: a new installation, an older system, a home you're buying, or a homeowner who mostly wants labor covered. Here's what each situation usually calls for, and what to check before you choose.

### If you're getting a new system installed

Register the equipment within the maker's window, because that's free parts coverage. Then ask every company quoting the job what labor coverage comes with it and for how long. Some include a labor plan, some a lifetime warranty with labor, and some neither, so compare quotes on that line as well as on price.

### If your system is older

Once a system is past its manufacturer's term, a home warranty plan is the usual option, and some labor plans take existing equipment. [Trinity](https://www.trinitywarranty.com/extended-warranty-programs/contractors) considers existing equipment case by case and requires it to be in factory-like condition. If the repair quotes are getting large, our guide to [repairing or replacing your HVAC system](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/hvac-replacement) covers when replacing makes more sense.

### If you're buying a home

Ask the seller for the system's age, the registration records, and any warranty paperwork. Transfer rules differ: Trane charges $99 within 90 days of the sale, JB Warranties transfers its plans free, and Choice lets you transfer its agreement at no fee. Noble's lifetime warranty doesn't transfer, because it's valid only for the original purchaser. Our new home HVAC warranty guide covers what the builder, the manufacturer, and a lifetime warranty each cover.

### If you want labor covered

Labor is the gap a manufacturer's warranty usually leaves. A fixed-term labor plan covers it for its term, at the hourly rate written into the plan. Trinity's contractor plans pay $75, $100, or $125 an hour, chosen by the installer, and JB's rates run from $85 to $300 an hour. A lifetime warranty with labor included covers labor on covered repairs for as long as you own the home, as long as you keep the maintenance current.

#### Example: Two Quotes for the Same New System

Two companies quote you the same heat pump with an air handler. The first quote includes only the manufacturer's warranty, and the second adds a 10-year labor plan. At Trinity's estimate, that plan would cost $1,010 to $1,900 on its own for a complete heat pump system, so the two prices don't buy the same coverage. Ask each company to write down who pays the labor on a covered repair in year 3, in year 9, and in year 12.

## What should you ask before you sign an HVAC warranty?

Ask the same questions about every warranty on every quote, and get the answers in writing. The checklist below follows the eight columns of our table, plus three questions that catch most surprises: the payout limit, the waiting period, and whether you can read the full contract first.

#### Questions to Ask Before You Sign an HVAC Warranty

- Who issues this warranty, and who pays a covered repair if that company closes?
- How long does it last, and when does the coverage start?
- Which parts does it cover: the whole system, or one component?
- Is labor included, and does it pay my technician's actual rate or a set amount?
- What do I pay at repair time: a deductible, a service fee, or nothing?
- Is there a limit on what it pays per repair, per system, or per year?
- What do I have to do to keep it, such as registering or booking maintenance?
- What voids it, and what does the contract exclude?
- Does it transfer if I sell the home, and is there a fee?
- Is there a waiting period before coverage starts?
- Can I read the full contract before I sign?

Keep the registration confirmation and every maintenance receipt with the contract, so you can show the terms were met.

## Questions & Answers

**Does a new HVAC system come with a warranty?**

Yes. Every new system comes with the manufacturer's limited warranty on some parts, usually for 5 to 10 years, and you usually get the longer term by registering within 60 to 90 days of installation. Labor isn't covered on most brands.

**Is labor included in an HVAC warranty?**

Not in most manufacturer warranties. Trane's base and registered warranties cover parts but not labor, while Carrier and Lennox offer a 3-year labor option when you register. Extended labor plans and some lifetime warranties from installing retailers include labor on covered repairs.

**Do I have to register my HVAC warranty?**

To get the longer term, usually yes. Trane and Lennox ask for registration within 60 days of installation, and Carrier within 90 days. In some states, including California, Florida, and Georgia, Lennox applies its longer parts term without registration.

**What happens to my HVAC warranty if I sell my home?**

It depends on each warranty's transfer terms. Noble's lifetime warranty doesn't transfer, because it's valid only for the original purchaser. Our new home HVAC warranty guide explains the rest for buyers and sellers.

**Is a 10-year labor warranty worth it for HVAC?**

It can be when it costs less than the labor on one major repair, and our 10-year labor warranty guide works through the math.

**What is the $5,000 rule for HVAC?**

It's a rule of thumb for deciding whether to repair or replace a system, explained in our guide to [HVAC repair versus replacement](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/hvac-replacement).
