# What Does a Lifetime HVAC Warranty Cover, Including Labor?

Short answer

A lifetime HVAC warranty covers whatever its terms list, and that varies more than the name suggests. A manufacturer's lifetime term usually covers one part, like a heat exchanger, and leaves labor to you. An installer's lifetime warranty can cover the major internal components of the system, labor included. Check the parts list and the labor line.

You're comparing quotes, and one says "lifetime warranty." This guide shows what that coverage usually includes on each kind of system, where labor fits, what's excluded, and what you have to do to keep it in force. Manufacturer, home warranty, and installer terms sit side by side, with dated sources, so you can see the range.

#### Key Takeaways

- Coverage depends on who writes the warranty. A manufacturer's lifetime term is usually one part, while an installer's lifetime warranty can cover the major internal components of the system.
- Labor is the biggest difference. Manufacturer warranties usually cover some parts, with registration, for 5 to 10 years, and don't pay labor on most brands.
- Air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, and mini splits carry different manufacturer terms, so check each piece of equipment on your quote.
- Common exclusions are routine maintenance, refrigerant on many manufacturer terms, ductwork, and damage from installation errors or outside causes.
- Coverage stays valid when you register on time, keep up the maintenance, use approved parts, and keep the records.
- Without coverage, a common repair runs $130 to $1,200 on a furnace and $200 to $2,000 on a heat pump, according to Angi.

## Which parts does a lifetime HVAC warranty cover?

It covers the parts its terms list, and the list is the whole story. Manufacturer lifetime terms usually attach to one long-lived part, most often a furnace heat exchanger. Installer lifetime warranties range from a single part to the major internal components of the system: the compressor, coils, motors, heat exchanger, and control boards.

![Chart of what lifetime HVAC warranties usually cover, the major parts of each listed system and labor only when the terms say so, and what they usually exclude: routine maintenance, refrigerant on many manufacturer terms, and damage from installation errors, floods, or power problems](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/hs-fs/hubfs/noble-blog/noble-15-usually-covered-and-not.jpeg?width=1456&height=720&name=noble-15-usually-covered-and-not.jpeg)

The FTC's [advice on warranties](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/warranties) gives the rule to read by: "If they aren't listed, assume they aren't covered." So when a quote says "lifetime warranty," ask for the document and find the list of covered parts before you compare anything else.

- **The compressor.** The most expensive part in an air conditioner or heat pump. Angi puts a compressor at $800 to $3,000.
- **The heat exchanger.** The furnace part most likely to carry a long manufacturer term. Angi lists a heat exchanger repair at $100 to $1,500, and [HomeGuide](https://homeguide.com/costs/heat-exchanger-cost) puts a full replacement at $1,000 to $3,000.
- **Coils, motors, and boards.** Usually covered on the same term as the other parts, if the warranty covers more than one component.
- **Labor.** Not a part, and often not covered. The next section explains why that matters most.

## Is labor covered by a lifetime HVAC warranty, or only parts?

On most manufacturer warranties, only parts. A manufacturer warranty usually covers some parts, with registration, for 5 to 10 years, and doesn't pay labor on most brands. An installer's lifetime warranty may include labor on covered repairs, and that line is the biggest difference between two warranties that both say lifetime.

#### Real-World Example: A Covered Part With a Labor Bill

Carrier's [air conditioner and heat pump warranty](https://www.shareddocs.com/hvac/docs/1009/Public/05/ACHP-C454-02WAR.pdf) (edition 08/26) covers parts and the compressor for 10 years when the system is registered within 90 days, and 5 years when it isn't. Its list of things it doesn't cover starts with labor and other costs for diagnosing, repairing, removing, and installing the parts. That's a normal manufacturer warranty, not a bad one.

Trane's own [warranty guide](https://www.trane.com/residential/en/resources/blog/trane-warranties-explained/) says the same in plain words: its warranties cover the parts but not the labor to repair them. Angi says labor can account for as much as half of a repair project's cost. If you're deciding whether to pay for extra labor coverage, our guide to whether a 10-year HVAC labor warranty is worth it runs the numbers.

## What does a lifetime warranty cover on each kind of HVAC system?

It depends on the system and on who wrote the warranty. Manufacturers set different terms for air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, and mini splits. Home warranties cap what they pay per system. Installer lifetime warranties vary by program. The table puts the typical terms side by side, with one installer program's published terms in the last column.

| System | Typical manufacturer warranty | Typical home warranty | Typical installer lifetime warranty | Noble's published terms |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Air conditioner | Parts and compressor 10 years if registered, 5 if not. Labor not included. | Repairs up to the plan's HVAC cap, plus a service fee per visit. | Varies by program. Read the parts list and the labor line. | The major internal components, labor included |
| Furnace | Parts 10 years if registered. Heat exchanger 20 years, or a limited lifetime term for the original owner on some models. | Repairs up to the cap. Some plans deny repairs after poor maintenance. | Varies by program. | Gas furnaces, including parts that fail, labor included |
| Heat pump | Parts and compressor 10 years if registered, 5 if not. Up to 12 years on the compressor of select models. | Repairs up to the cap. | Varies by program. | Heating and cooling on one system, labor included |
| Ductless mini split | Mitsubishi: 5 years on parts and 7 on the compressor, 10 years if registered, 12 with a certified installer. Labor not included. | Only if the plan lists it. | Varies by program. | Head units and the outdoor condenser, labor included |
| Packaged system | Varies by model. Read the model's own warranty document. | Only if the plan lists it. | Varies by program. | Heating and cooling in one outdoor cabinet, labor included |

Sources, checked October 17, 2026: [Carrier](https://www.shareddocs.com/hvac/docs/1009/Public/05/ACHP-C454-02WAR.pdf) for air conditioners and heat pumps, [Carrier's gas furnace warranty](https://www.shareddocs.com/hvac/docs/1009/Public/04/90GSFRN-C-01WAR.pdf) and [Trane](https://www.trane.com/residential/en/resources/blog/trane-warranties-explained/) for furnaces and compressors, [Mitsubishi Electric](https://www.mitsubishicomfort.com/warranties) for mini splits, and [NerdWallet](https://www.nerdwallet.com/home-ownership/home-warranty/learn/does-a-home-warranty-cover-hvac), which puts home warranty HVAC caps at $2,000 to $6,500 per system. One [American Home Shield plan](https://www.ahs.com/plans/shieldgold/) caps it at $5,000 per system. [This Old House](https://www.thisoldhouse.com/home-finances/home-warranty-pros-and-cons) puts the service fee at $75 to $125 a visit.

The last column is one example from the broad end of the range. Noble's warranty, offered through participating HVAC retailers, covers repairs on the major internal components of those five system types, with labor included, for as long as you own the home, and every contract is backed by a national, brand-name A-rated insurance company. Its published terms also say what's outside it: it isn't a maintenance contract, it covers residential systems only, and it sits alongside the manufacturer's parts warranty rather than replacing it.

![Chart of 2026 HVAC repair costs without coverage: air conditioner $450 to $2,000, furnace $130 to $1,200, heat pump $200 to $2,000, mini split $300 to $550, and packaged system $450 to $550](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/hs-fs/hubfs/noble-blog/noble-15-repair-costs-by-system-v2.jpeg?width=1456&height=720&name=noble-15-repair-costs-by-system-v2.jpeg)

The repair costs above come from [Angi's HVAC repair cost guide](https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-hvac-repair-cost.htm), updated August 4, 2026, and they're what a common repair costs when nothing covers it. If you're still sizing the system itself, our guide to [new HVAC system cost by square footage](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/hvac-cost-by-square-footage) helps you read the quote.

## Does a lifetime warranty cover heat pumps and furnaces?

It can cover both, but the terms usually differ. A heat pump runs in summer and winter, so its compressor works year round, and manufacturers usually give it the same parts term as an air conditioner. A furnace's heat exchanger often carries the longest term on the system, sometimes a limited lifetime term for the original owner.

Carrier's [condensing gas furnace warranty](https://www.shareddocs.com/hvac/docs/1009/Public/04/90GSFRN-C-01WAR.pdf), for example, gives the heat exchanger on some models a lifetime term for the original owner who registers within 90 days, 20 years for everyone else, and 10 years on other parts when the furnace is registered, 5 when it isn't. Trane's warranty guide lists 20 years on its furnace heat exchangers and up to 12 years on the compressor of select units.

Some homes pair a heat pump with a furnace that takes over on the coldest days. If that's the setup on your quote, ask for the warranty terms on both pieces of equipment, in writing, and check that each one is named. A warranty that lists only the outdoor unit leaves the furnace on its manufacturer's terms alone.

## Does a lifetime warranty cover ductless mini splits?

Only when the terms name them, and the indoor heads matter as much as the outdoor unit. A mini split is several pieces of equipment working as one system, so check that the warranty covers the indoor head units as well as the outdoor condenser. Coverage on the outdoor unit alone leaves the parts you see every day uncovered.

[ENERGY STAR describes the setup](https://www.energystar.gov/products/ductless_heating_cooling): one or more head units mount on an interior wall or ceiling, with a unit outside, and a mini split heat pump can heat and cool the home. Because it runs in both seasons, a repair can come at any time of year. Angi puts a common mini split repair at $300 to $550.

Manufacturer terms reward registration and certified installers. [Mitsubishi Electric](https://www.mitsubishicomfort.com/warranties) gives 5 years on parts and 7 on the compressor as standard, 10 years when the owner registers within 90 days, and 12 years when a certified installer installs and registers it. None of those terms includes labor.

## What isn't covered by a lifetime HVAC warranty?

Most lifetime warranties exclude routine maintenance, damage from outside causes, and problems caused by a poor installation, and many manufacturer terms exclude refrigerant. The written exclusions list is where these live, and the FTC's advice is to assume anything not listed as covered isn't. Read the exclusions before you compare prices.

Carrier's warranty is a good model of a typical exclusions list. It doesn't cover:

- Labor and diagnostic costs.
- Normal maintenance, including filter cleaning or replacement and lubrication.
- Damage from faulty installation, improper servicing, or unauthorized alteration.
- Damage from floods, winds, fires, lightning, or power problems.
- Parts not supplied or designated by the manufacturer.
- Any cost to replace, refill, or dispose of refrigerant.
- Products bought over the internet.

Home warranties draw the lines differently. [NerdWallet](https://www.nerdwallet.com/home-ownership/home-warranty/learn/does-a-home-warranty-cover-hvac) notes that most won't cover a repair while the manufacturer warranty still applies, and that not every plan covering heating and cooling includes ductwork. [This Old House](https://www.thisoldhouse.com/home-finances/home-warranty-pros-and-cons) lists improper installation, insufficient maintenance, and pre-existing conditions among the exclusions most home warranty contracts carry, so read your own.

## What keeps lifetime HVAC coverage valid?

Five habits keep most lifetime coverage in force: register the equipment on time, have it installed by a licensed technician, keep up the maintenance, keep the records, and use approved parts for repairs. Each one appears in manufacturers' own warranty documents, and installer lifetime warranties can make maintenance their main condition, as Noble's does.

![Chart of five habits that keep lifetime HVAC coverage valid: register on time, use a licensed installer, keep up the maintenance, keep the records, and use approved parts](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/hs-fs/hubfs/noble-blog/noble-15-keep-coverage-valid.jpeg?width=1456&height=720&name=noble-15-keep-coverage-valid.jpeg)

1. **Register on time.** Carrier asks for registration within 90 days for its longer term, Trane within 60 days, and Mitsubishi within 90 days. Miss the window, and you're usually left on the shorter base term.
2. **Use a licensed installer.** Carrier requires the product to be installed properly and by a licensed HVAC technician.
3. **Keep up the maintenance.** [Lennox's warranty](https://www.lennox.com/dA/5fab9c3334/W900002-02.pdf) says failure to maintain the equipment voids it. Noble's lifetime warranty asks for a spring and a fall service every year. [ENERGY STAR](https://www.energystar.gov/saveathome/heating-cooling/maintenance-checklist) recommends checking the air filter once a month and having the cooling checked in spring and the heating in fall.
4. **Keep the records.** The FTC's advice is to save the receipt with the warranty, because it proves the date you bought and that you're the original owner. Add every service invoice to the same folder.
5. **Use approved parts and report failures promptly.** Lennox requires repairs with manufacturer-specified parts by a licensed technician, and asks for warranty claims within 45 days of a failure.

Selling the house raises a separate question, because transfer rules vary by brand and program. The new home HVAC warranty guide explains how coverage passes between owners.

## How do you check what your quote's warranty covers?

Ask for the warranty document before you sign, and read four lines: the covered parts and systems, the labor clause, the exclusions, and your duties. Then compare quotes on those four lines, not on the word lifetime. A quote that can't show you the document hasn't told you what it covers yet.

#### Four Lines to Find Before You Sign

1. Covered parts and systems: is every piece of equipment on the quote named?
2. The labor clause: are labor and trip charges included on a covered repair?
3. The exclusions: what the warranty names as not covered.
4. Your duties: the registration deadline and the maintenance schedule.

If the document says limited lifetime and you want to know what that label means, our guide to [what a limited lifetime warranty means on HVAC](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/is-a-lifetime-hvac-warranty-too-good-to-be-true) explains it. For a side-by-side of the main types of HVAC warranty, see [our comparison of HVAC warranty types](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/best-hvac-lifetime-warranty-programs-compared), and for the brand-by-brand manufacturer terms, see [what HVAC manufacturer warranties cover](https://www.nobleadminnetwork.com/blog/hvac-manufacturer-warranty-coverage). ## Questions & Answers

**What are the warranties for heat pumps?**

Most major brands give heat pump parts and the compressor 10 years when you register on time and 5 years when you don't, and labor isn't included. Carrier, for example, asks for registration within 90 days. An installer's lifetime warranty can add longer coverage and labor.

**Is AC service covered under warranty?**

Routine service isn't. Manufacturer warranties exclude normal maintenance such as filter changes, and many lifetime warranties require that maintenance rather than pay for it. Repairs to covered parts are what a warranty pays for.

**Does a lifetime HVAC warranty cover refrigerant?**

Often not on manufacturer terms. Carrier's warranty excludes the cost to replace, refill, or dispose of refrigerant. Some home warranty plans cover it within a limit, such as $10 a pound on one American Home Shield plan. Check the written terms.

**Does a lifetime HVAC warranty cover ductwork?**

Usually not. Equipment warranties cover the equipment, and not every home warranty plan that covers heating and cooling includes ductwork. If ductwork matters to you, look for it by name in the terms.

**Can skipping maintenance cancel a lifetime HVAC warranty?**

Yes. Lennox's warranty says failure to maintain the equipment voids it, and installer lifetime warranties can make maintenance their main condition. Keep a record of every visit.
