What Do HVAC Manufacturer Warranties Cover, Brand by Brand?

Noble Admin Network | Published on: September 9, 2026 | Time to read: 15 min | Updated on: October 17, 2026

Short answer

Most HVAC manufacturer warranties cover some parts for 5 to 10 years, and the longer term usually depends on registering within 60 or 90 days. Many brands give the compressor or heat exchanger a longer term. Labor isn't covered on most brands. We checked nine brands' own warranty pages in October 2026, and the table below shows each one.

This guide covers what each brand's warranty pays for, how to check whether yours is still active, and what can cancel it. Every brand fact comes from that brand's own warranty, registration, or product page.

Key Takeaways

  • On American Standard, Bryant, Carrier, Goodman, and Trane, registering in time takes the parts warranty from 5 years to 10.
  • The registration deadline is short: 60 days on five of the brands we checked, and 90 days on Bryant and Carrier.
  • Labor isn't covered on most brands. Carrier and Lennox let registered owners trade some parts years for 3 years of labor.
  • When an AC compressor is still under warranty, HomeGuide puts the replacement at $600 to $1,200, against $1,800 to $2,800 out of warranty.
  • Your serial number opens the warranty lookup on the brands we checked, so keep the invoice that lists it.

How long does an HVAC warranty last?

Most manufacturer warranties on central air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces cover some parts for 5 years if you never register and 10 years if you register in time. Many brands add a longer term on the compressor or heat exchanger, and Lennox's top line starts at 10 years without registering. Every deadline below counts from the day the system was installed.

Chart of parts warranty terms by brand: American Standard, Bryant, Carrier, Goodman, and Trane each go from 5 years to 10 years with registration; the deadline is 60 days for American Standard, Goodman, and Trane and 90 days for Bryant and Carrier

The pattern repeats across most of the brands we checked. American Standard and Trane say their Base Limited Warranty typically lasts five years and their Registered Limited Warranty typically lasts 10, if you register within 60 days of installation. Carrier gives 5 years of parts if you don't register within 90 days and 10 years if you do. Bryant says its products typically come with a 10-year standard parts limited warranty if registered within 90 days, and 5 years otherwise. Goodman's warranty pages say its air conditioners and gas furnaces come with 5 years of parts without any action, and up to 10 years with online registration within 60 days.

Lennox works the other way around. Its base warranty needs no registration: 5 years on components for the Merit and Elite lines, and 10 years for the Dave Lennox Signature Collection. Registering within 60 days adds an extension that takes Merit and Elite to 10 years of parts and Signature to 12.

Rheem and Ruud list a 10-year conditional parts warranty on their product pages, marked registration required. Neither page states the term for an unregistered unit or the registration deadline, so check the certificate for your model.

Some states don't let a brand tie the term to registration. Goodman and Lennox both say owners in California, Florida, Georgia, and Quebec get the registered parts term without registering, with Georgia counted for units installed from January 1, 2026.

What do HVAC manufacturer warranties cover, brand by brand?

The table lists nine equipment brands in alphabetical order, with what each brand's own page states about parts, the compressor or heat exchanger, registration, labor, and transfer. Where a page doesn't state something, the cell says Not stated. No brand is ranked, and terms vary by model, so check your model's certificate.

Scope: residential split air conditioners, heat pumps, and gas furnaces on each brand's standard lines, unless the row names a product line. Every page was checked on October 17, 2026.

How we checked: we copied only what each brand's own page states. Our full method is in how we research and compare HVAC warranties. Daikin isn't listed because its warranty page states only “up to a 12-Year Parts Limited Warranty”, with no unregistered term or deadline, and York's warranty pages didn't load for us.

Trane's page also says its limited warranties are attached to a specific serial number and don't travel with the homeowner, so if you move, the coverage stays with the equipment. If you're buying a home, our new home HVAC warranty guide covers what a buyer inherits.

What does a furnace warranty cover?

A furnace warranty usually covers parts for 5 to 10 years with registration and gives the heat exchanger a longer term, from 20 years to lifetime on the brands that state one. Labor isn't covered on most brands, so a covered heat exchanger can still leave you paying for the work to install it.

Goodman's gas furnace product pages (GR9S80, GR9S96, and GRVM97, checked October 2026) list 5 years of parts without registering, 10 years with online registration within 60 days, and a 20-year heat exchanger. Lennox lists 20 years on the heat exchanger of its 80% efficiency Elite and Signature furnaces and lifetime on their 90% and higher and oil models, and 20 years on the Merit line. Amana lists a 20-year heat exchanger limited warranty with registration within 60 days, and Rheem's R801T gas furnace page lists 10 years of conditional parts with registration and 20 years on the heat exchanger.

Angi's 2026 HVAC repair cost guide puts a heat exchanger repair at $100 to $1,500 and an ignitor at $150 to $300.

What does an AC warranty cover?

An air conditioner warranty usually covers parts for 5 to 10 years with registration, and some brands add a longer term on the compressor. Of the nine brands we checked, Goodman, Lennox, and Rheem state a compressor term on their own pages, and Amana and Bryant offer unit replacement on some models.

Chart of compressor and heat exchanger terms stated on brand pages: Goodman lifetime compressor on select higher-efficiency air conditioners and a 20-year gas furnace heat exchanger, with registration; Lennox compressor up to 12 years with registration and heat exchanger 20 years or lifetime, depending on model; Rheem 10-year conditional compressor on the WA15AY and 20-year heat exchanger on the R801T; Amana 20-year heat exchanger and 10-year unit replacement with registration

Goodman says select higher-efficiency air conditioners carry a lifetime compressor limited warranty for the original registered owner. Select models add a 10-year unit replacement limited warranty: if the original registered owner has a compressor failure, Goodman replaces the unit with a comparable Goodman air conditioner or heat pump. Lennox lists 5 years on the compressor for its Merit line and 10 for Elite, extended to 10 or 12 years for registered equipment. Rheem's WA15AY air conditioner page lists a 10-year conditional compressor warranty, registration required.

Amana lists a 10-year unit replacement limited warranty with registration, and Bryant offers one on select Evolution System products if the compressor, coil, or heat exchanger fails from a defect. Carrier, Trane, and American Standard don't state a separate compressor term on the pages we read, so check the parts term against your certificate. HomeGuide puts a compressor replacement at $1,800 to $2,800 out of warranty.

What are the four kinds of HVAC coverage?

There are four kinds of coverage on a home HVAC system: the manufacturer's warranty, the installer's workmanship guarantee, an extended labor plan, and a lifetime warranty through the installer. They cover different things, so the useful questions are which one pays for parts, which one pays for labor, and for how long.

Kind of coverageWho gives itHow longPartsLabor
Manufacturer warrantyThe equipment brandUsually 5 to 10 years on parts, longer on some compressors and heat exchangersSome parts, with registrationNot on most brands
Installer workmanship guaranteeThe company that installed the systemSet by the installerNo; it covers the installation workOn installation problems, on the installer's terms
Extended labor planThe manufacturer, the installer, or a third partyA set term; Lennox's Comfort Shield, for example, offers 3, 5, 7, 10, or 12 yearsDepends on the planYes, on covered repairs
Lifetime warranty through the installerThe installing company, through a warranty programAs long as you own the home, on programs that say so, usually with annual maintenanceCovered repairs, per the program's termsIncluded on covered repairs in some programs

For a full side-by-side of these four types, and the questions to ask before you sign, see which HVAC warranty is best: four types compared. The difference between an installer's workmanship guarantee and a warranty has its own guide.

Does an HVAC warranty cover labor?

On most brands, no. A manufacturer warranty pays for the defective part, and you pay the technician to find the problem and install the new part. Goodman's warranty pages don't mention labor at all, and Carrier and Lennox are the only brands in our table whose factory warranty can include labor, with conditions.

Trane and American Standard say that under either limited warranty you pay for labor and shipping. Carrier offers 5 years of parts plus 3 years of labor instead of 10 years of parts, only if your installer takes part in its program, and Lennox lets registered owners trade parts years for 3 years of labor.

Chart of what an AC repair still costs when the part is under warranty, from HomeGuide: compressor $600 to $1,200 (not under warranty $1,800 to $2,800), evaporator coil $1,000 to $2,500 ($2,500 to $4,500), condenser $300 to $1,200 ($1,200 to $4,200), and blower motor $200 to $400 ($500 to $2,300)

Here's what that leaves you paying. HomeGuide's 2026 AC repair cost guide lists what you pay when the part is under warranty, next to the full price when it isn't:

AC repairYou pay when the part is under warrantyFull price when it isn't
Compressor$600 to $1,200$1,800 to $2,800
Evaporator coil (labor and refrigerant)$1,000 to $2,500$2,500 to $4,500
Condenser (labor)$300 to $1,200$1,200 to $4,200
Blower motor (labor)$200 to $400$500 to $2,300

HomeGuide puts technician labor at $75 to $150 an hour, and Angi puts the first service call at $100 to $250 and says labor can be as much as 50% of a repair's cost.

Example: The Same Compressor Failure, Registered and Not

Say an air conditioner's compressor fails in year 7, on a brand whose page lists 5 years of parts without registration and 10 years with it, and no separate compressor term, such as Carrier or Trane. If the owner registered in time, the part is covered, and HomeGuide puts the in-warranty replacement at $600 to $1,200. If nobody registered, the parts term ended in year 5, and HomeGuide puts the whole job at $1,800 to $2,800.

Whether a separate labor plan pays for itself depends on your system and how long you'll stay in the home, and our guide to whether a 10-year HVAC labor warranty is worth it runs the numbers. If a big repair lands on an older system, the repair or replace guide and its $5,000 rule helps you decide, and new HVAC system cost by square footage shows what a replacement runs.

How do I know if my HVAC is still under warranty?

Find the serial number on the label of your outdoor unit or furnace, or on your installation invoice, and enter it in the brand's warranty lookup. The lookup shows whether the unit was registered and which term applies. The link for each brand is in the last column of the table above.

  1. Find the brand and the serial number. Bryant's and Rheem's lookups ask for the serial number, and Trane says its limited warranties are attached to a specific serial number.
  2. Look it up. Use the brand's lookup link from the table.
  3. Check the registration date. If the unit was registered within the brand's 60 or 90 days, you should see the longer term. If not, expect the base term.
  4. Count from the installation date. A 10-year parts term on a system installed in 2019 runs into 2029.
  5. Ask your installer if nothing shows up. Trane tells owners never to assume the installer registered the product, so ask whether and when it was done.
Chart of registration deadlines by brand: 60 days for 5 brands (Amana, American Standard, Goodman, Lennox, and Trane), 90 days for 2 brands (Bryant and Carrier), and not stated for 2 brands (Rheem and Ruud product pages say registration is required but give no deadline)

Questions to Ask Your Installer the Week the System Goes In

Who is registering the equipment, and by what date? Can you send me the registration confirmation? Which parts carry a longer term on this model, and is labor covered at all? What maintenance does the warranty expect, and will you keep the records? The FTC also advises saving the receipt with the warranty, because it proves the date you bought the product and that you're the original owner.

What voids a manufacturer HVAC warranty?

Missing the registration deadline shortens the term on most of the brands we checked. Brands also exclude failures that aren't manufacturing defects, installs outside their rules, some parts problems, and missed maintenance, and some terms end or cost a fee to transfer when you sell the home. Your certificate lists every exclusion.

  • Missed registration. On Carrier, Trane, American Standard, Bryant, and Goodman, registering late doesn't cancel the warranty, but it leaves you on the 5-year base term. American Standard says a product registered after 60 days automatically gets the Base Limited Warranty.
  • Failures that aren't defects. Trane says parts that break for any reason other than a manufacturer defect aren't covered under any warranty.
  • An install outside the rules. Daikin offers no warranty on equipment bought over the internet unless the installer follows all applicable codes, policies, and licensing requirements.
  • Parts. Carrier tells owners to insist on genuine Carrier parts for repairs. Federal law limits how far a brand can take that: the FTC says a manufacturer can't require you to use specific parts or services to keep warranty coverage, unless it provides them free or gets an FTC waiver.
  • Missed maintenance. Amana requires annual maintenance for its 10-year unit replacement warranty, and Goodman's pages cover parts that fail under normal use and maintenance. Keep every maintenance receipt.
  • Selling the home. Trane and American Standard charge a $99 fee to transfer a registered warranty within 90 days of the sale, and Bryant's unit replacement warranty isn't available to later owners.

You're entitled to read the terms first: the FTC's guide to federal warranty law says written warranties must be available for customers to read before buying. If you have a lifetime warranty through your installer, its own upkeep rules apply, and what a lifetime HVAC warranty covers explains how to keep that coverage valid.

Can a lifetime warranty through your installer cover labor?

Yes, on some programs. A lifetime warranty offered through the installing company can pay labor on covered repairs as well as parts, for as long as you own the home, which fills the gap most manufacturer warranties leave. Terms vary by program, so read what's covered and what upkeep it requires.

Noble Administration Network is one example. It administers a lifetime warranty on residential central air conditioners, gas furnaces, heat pumps, ductless mini splits, and packaged units installed by participating HVAC retailers. It covers repairs on the major internal components of the system, with labor included on covered repairs, for as long as you own the home and keep up a spring and a fall service every year. There's no separate warranty fee: the retailer builds its cost into the price of the installation, and a covered repair costs the homeowner $0. A national, brand-name A-rated insurance company stands behind every contract. It sits alongside the manufacturer's parts warranty rather than replacing it, and it's for homes only, not commercial buildings.

Questions & Answers

How long does an HVAC warranty last?

Most manufacturer warranties cover parts for 5 years if you don't register and 10 years if you register within the brand's deadline, usually 60 or 90 days after installation. Many brands give the compressor or heat exchanger a longer term, up to lifetime on some models. Terms vary by model, so check your certificate.

How do I know if my HVAC is still under warranty?

Find the serial number on the unit's label or your installation invoice and enter it in the brand's online warranty lookup, which tells you whether the unit was registered and which term you have. If nothing comes up, ask your installer whether and when they registered it.

Does an HVAC warranty cover labor?

Not on most brands. A manufacturer warranty usually pays for the defective part, and you pay for the labor. Carrier and Lennox offer 3 years of labor to registered owners in exchange for a shorter parts term, and Carrier's option depends on your installer taking part. Extended labor plans and some installer lifetime warranties add labor.

What voids a Trane warranty?

Trane's page says parts that break for any reason other than a manufacturer defect aren't covered under any warranty. Missing the 60-day registration window doesn't void it, but it leaves you on the Base Limited Warranty, usually five years instead of 10. Check your certificate for the full list of exclusions.

Which AC has a 10-year compressor warranty?

Among the brands we checked, Rheem's WA15AY air conditioner page lists a 10-year conditional compressor warranty with registration, and Lennox lists 10 years on the Elite compressor, or 10 to 12 years on registered equipment. Goodman offers a lifetime compressor on select higher-efficiency models for the original registered owner. Terms vary by model.

What is the warranty period for an AC compressor?

It depends on the brand and model. Where a brand's own page lists a compressor term, it runs from 5 years on the Lennox Merit line to 10 years on Rheem's WA15AY and the Lennox Elite line, up to 12 years on registered Lennox equipment, and lifetime on select Goodman models for the original registered owner. Check your model's certificate.
